# The client book

*The accountant, working out which client to phone first.*

- Practice: Halewood & Co, Chartered Accountants, fictional, with synthetic client transactions

## The order is the answer

Ranked by what happens if nobody rings, never by what a client is worth. Cover the law requires and
does not appear in the books comes first, then a sum insured short by a quarter or more, then
everything worth raising the next time you speak. The group a client is in is the sentence to open
the call with.

## None of this needed a client to say yes

Name, company number, SIC code and incorporation date are on the public register, and they are enough
to read the trade, size the cover lines and produce a finding. 2 of the
10 clients on this book have authorised nothing at all and still carry findings;
8 have a ledger connected, which is what adds payroll, owned items and turnover.
The oldest cover level on this book was set on 1 Jul 2018 and has not been revisited since.

## What a practice may do with this

Notice a gap in the accounts, tell the client, and give them the name of a broker or an adviser. Not
contact an insurer on a client's behalf, and not fill in all or a significant part of a claim form.
So this is a ranked list and a set of links to each client's own findings, which is the whole shape
the rules allow. A key issued for a practice does not carry `open_claim` and no key does: a claim is
always the client's own to make.

Marks on **this** book live in the query string. `?called=<company number>.<company number>` is a book
with those calls already made, and `?all=1` shows every client rather than the capped list. Nothing
writes them down, because these ten clients are fictional and belong to nobody, so there is nobody
for a mark to belong to. A practice signed in to its own book is the other case: its marks are kept
against its account and are there when it comes back, and the same mark shows against that company
on a crawled book at `/book`.
